primary areas: communication skills, organization skills, client management skills, and exceptional
hands-on skills. Getting clients in and out the door involves many steps along with giving them an

can better plan and implement a meaningful opening and closing of the massage that add to the

Therapists often emphasize learning advanced soft tissue skills and fail to fully appreciate skills that
seem less technical, such as positioning and draping and sequencing a relaxation massage
appropriately. Although it is desirable to master a range of therapeutic techniques, the foundation
skills of draping and fluid relaxation massage lead to an uninterrupted client experience and allow the
client to relax completely and enjoy the session. Underlying all of these skills is the ability to
communicate effectively when explaining paperwork to clients, directing them to the treatment room,
describing the benefits of a technique, giving direction during the session, and coaching the client
through an activity such as diaphragmatic breathing. Lack of skills in any of these areas can directly
impact the therapist’s ability to attract and retain clients and make a good living from massage.
